Challenge
A new executive director wanted to “re-imagine” what IT could do for the government services organization that she took over. Employees had a great attitude and were committed but many had significant tenure and had been operating in something of a vacuum for a number of years. As such, CXO Science was commissioned to do an assessment with “fresh eyes” for what was possible.
Outcome
CXO Science employed an “ask the people” approach to assessing the IT function at the organization. An IT satisfaction survey was conducted which achieved an 80 percent response rate. Perceptions of the business applications in use, key initiatives, helpdesk, IT communications, and overall performance were gathered. Results were cross-tabulated by office location, primary business application, initiative, and business function to give targeted focus areas for the IT team to execute improvement strategies on.
Key functional executives (30 plus) were interviewed to supplement the findings from the survey instrument. Additionally, CXO Science participated in key meetings and activities over a six-week period to observe the business processes and culture of the organization.
Key recommendations and deliverables included:
- A new IT organizational design
- A new IT reporting relationship
- An application portfolio strategy
- A project portfolio strategy
- Mentoring of the interim and new IT leaders
